GEORGE TOWN: The Joblink Centre here is on the verge of losing its office in Grove Road as the land will be returned to the Handicapped Children’s Centre, which is embarking on an expansion drive.
Joblink president Dr Gurdev Singh Gill said the centre faced possible foreclosure if no proper venue was identified soon.
“Due to the increasing number of students in the Handicapped Children’s Centre, they need the land for expansion,” he said during the organisation’s community programme here.
He added that all the hard work being put into the centre since it began operating back in 1992 would be for nothing if it were to cease operation.
“The centre provides jobs and training for disabled people who are unable to seek employment on their own.
“Our main purpose is to train and rehabilitate them to be ready for employment as well as to follow up on their job suitability,” he said.
The 47 trainees in the centre were given work like cleaning recycled PVC tubes, arranging the memo blocks and other odd jobs to earn pocket money.
Chief trainer G. Palaniveloo said the trainees recently started making paper replicas of a luxury multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) for the upcoming Qing Ming.
“A company in Nordin Street had commissioned us to make the paper replicas about three months ago. We are only able to make between 20 and 25 such replicas a day.
“The company is very happy with our handiwork and wants us to continue making the paper replicas even after Qing Ming,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai said he would try to help Joblink look for a solution to its problem.
“The centre is a good place for people with disabilities to not only earn some money but also to make new friends and learn a useful skill.”
